Medford Chemists PHARMACISTS PROVIDE INFORMATION & TIPS ON APPROPRIATE CORONAVIRUS PRECAUTIONS

Medford Chemists Pharmacists often serve as “the first line” of contact in healthcare. As such, they have received questions regarding the Coronavirus, and want to share some appropriate precautions:

NOVEL CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) – WHAT IS IT?

• Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that cause mild illnesses such as the common cold, to more serious illnesses such as pneumonia.

• Recently a novel coronavirus, COVID-19, was discovered in China. Over several months it has spread to many countries throughout the world. We are just be-ginning to see cases in the US. It is important to familiarize yourself with the symptoms and what you can do to stay healthy.

• Most people with COVID-19 will feel as if they have a bad cold or the flu. Common symptoms include fever, cough, and/or shortness of breath. Some people will require hospitalization. People who are at most risk for severe illness are elderly or have health conditions such as asthma or other respiratory illnesses, immune disorders, heart disease, and/or diabetes.

• The virus is likely to be spread from person to person by respiratory droplets like the flu, but more information is needed to know how easily it spreads.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?

You can go about your daily life, but do take common-sense precautions:

• Get the flu shot—it’s not too late! (The flu shot will NOT protect you from COVID-19; however, it will help prevent the flu which has similar symptoms to this coronavirus.)

• Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands). Throw the tissues away immediately in a lidded trash bin.

• Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for 20+ seconds, the time it takes to sing your ABCs or "Happy Birthday" twice. If soap and water are una-vailable you can use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Remember to rub the sanitizer into the front and backs of your hands for at least 20 seconds.

• Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces with regular household cleaners or wipes.

• Make a family plan, like what you will do if a child is sick (who will stay home, etc.), who will do the grocery shopping...

• If you feel sick, stay home and separate yourself from other members of your household.

• Call your doctor prior to visiting the office, they can let you know if an office visit is necessary. Be prepared to answer questions related to your symptoms, recent travel history, and potential exposure to COVID-19.
